Sugar-Free & Low-Carb Mojito Recipe (1)

I can’t make mojitos without thinking of Jack Sparrow…

“Why is all the rum gone?” he asks in his perpetual state of drunken humor. It cracks me up every time. 🙂

I’m not big on rum, actually. Of all the hard liquors, rum is probably toward the middle of my list (below whisky and bourbon and above gin… LOL).

Yet, rum is what makes a mojito and mojito — and I do love a good mojito! Well, that and fresh peppermint. I do love my peppermint patch!

Traditional mojitos are full of sugar, (and rum is really sweet too) so I came up with a Keto/Low-Carb Mojito recipe!

Using my Sugar-Free Simple Syrup (recipe below!), you, too, can mix yourself a refreshing mojito and relax on your front porch!

How to Make Keto Simple Syrup

Simple syrup is equal parts sugar and water. A keto/low-carb simple syrup is made just as quickly and easily as a regular simple syrup.

Because granulated sugar doesn’t mix very well into a cold co*cktail (a refreshingly ice cold keto mojito, for instance), bartenders use simple syrups to sweeten drinks without muddying them up with gritty sugar.

In our case, we’re using a keto simple syrup to add sweetness without the sugar to our yummy low-carb mojito (or any other co*cktail recipe you’d like to convert to low-carb).

To make a keto simple syrup, you need:

  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup Dietz Sweet or your favorite keto sweetener blend, such as Lakanto White

Add the keto sweetener to the boiling water and stir until dissolved. Voila! A keto simple syrup!

Part of the magic of mojitos is the fresh mint leaves, which you’ll muddle in the bottom of your glass. Or, you can get fancy and use a co*cktail shaker, but I prefer to muddle right in the glass.

Next, add fresh lime juice, rum, and keto simple syrup. Stir, stir, stir! (Or shake, shake, shake, if using a co*cktail shaker.)

Add ice to your glass.

Finally, fill ‘er up with something unflavored and bubbly, like club soda or plain sparkling water.

Recipe FAQs

I don’t have fresh peppermint leaves. What can I use instead?

No fresh peppermint? No mojito. 🙁

But, seriously. The magic of mojitos is the fresh peppermint. There really is no substitute. Not peppermint extract, not peppermint flavoring, not peppermint essential oil.

Can I use bottled lime juice?

Sure can! While I prefer fresh, I know that bottled juice can be more convenient. Please make sure to choose an organic bottled lime juice without any added ingredients.

My rum isn’t white. Can I use another type of rum?

Yep! Use whatever rum you have on hand. If you can find a locally distilled rum or organic rum, even better. The taste of your keto mojito will only be as good as the quality of your ingredients, so don’t go with cheap rum, mmmmkay? Also, using a brown rum will make your mojitos a darker color than what you see in my photos. Just letting you know!
