1. Grand Central Kitchen

To many, Grand Central Kitchen is considered the best breakfast in Birmingham. A top-tier fry-up, as it were. (It’s also one of the cheapest places for food too.) The number of times we’ve been wandering around the City Centre, a bit worse for wear, and have been so thankful for this place is too many to count. This cosy yet reliable eatery, situated next to the Grand Central tram stop, is all about the all-day breakfast menu. For one of the best Full English breakfasts in Birmingham look no further.

2. Albert Schloss

If anyone can compete with the English for big breakfasts, it has to be Germany. The Bavarian restaurant, Albert Schloss, provides a range of hearty, Alpine-inspired dishes. Some of the highlights include the Mushroom Hash, a vegetarian twist on the classic hash with creamed garlic mushrooms, potato rosti, fried egg and chives; Cook Haus Breakfast, which consists of a Cumberland sausage, black pudding, treacle-cured bacon, sunnyside egg, a portobello mushroom, beans, grilled tomato and potato rösti; while other favourites include Kroissant Royale, Salmon Royale, Turkish Eggs and the Pancake Haus.

3. The Early Bird Cafe

This is what our breakfast dreams are filled with. Honestly, The Early Bird Bakery in Kings Heath makes some of the most visually-stunning viennoiseries in town. If you like your breakfast with a bit of sweetness to it, this bakery might be the best spot in Birmingham for you. Previous creations include the cherry bakewell croissant, peanut butter and raspberry éclair, and BBQ pineapple and coconut crème pât Danish. But it’s the Snickers twice-baked pain au chocolat that still keeps us up at night.

4. Leverton & Halls

Situated in Bournville, Leverton & Halls offers simple yet satisfying home-cooked breakfasts. With a passion for fresh ingredients that goes into every dish, you’ll struggle to find a better full English breakfast in Birmingham. There’s also a veggie and a vegan alternative. Or you can enjoy egg florentine, a Spanish omelette or the option to make your own omelette. Why not stay the night before too? Leverton & Halls also runs a bed & breakfast service with three lovely rooms above the cafe.

5. Boston Tea Party

There’s a fine line between breakfast and brunch, and if you ask us, Boston Tea Party walks it well. For a brilliant breakfast in Birmingham, The Boss Breakfast is a plate heaving with an Old English sausage, back bacon, hog’s pudding, scrambled eggs, baked beans, homemade hash browns, mushrooms and two slices of toast. The lighter (but no less filling) West Country strips it back to just sausage, back bacon, scrambled eggs, baked beans, mushrooms and toast. With veggie and vegan options for both.

But the breakfast items don’t stop there. There’s a range of breakfast muffins available, as well as eggs on toast, a bacon or sausage bap, and some healthy porridge. Straying into brunch territory, you might want to fill up on salmon, avocado & scrambled eggs on sourdough toast, shakshuka, or American pancakes.

7. Paul at No 41

Sleek and simple, this cosy spot in Harborne serves an all-day breakfast that will blow you away. Scrambled eggs or tofu, simple bacon sarnies, or a creamy bowl of porridge should satisfy most. But hungry horses should tackle the traditional breakfast: Cumberland sausage, bacon, homemade rosti and baked beans, black pudding, mushrooms tomatoes and toast. Not only is there a vegan version at Paul at No 41, but a no-carb special too (for you bodybuilders). This comes with scrambled eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes and spinach.

The exposed brick interior might give a hipster vibe, but Yorks isn’t all facade. Breaking away from traditional breakfast items, it’s easily one of the best places to start your day in Birmingham. Try the Marrakech avocado toast that uses hummus, pickled onions and dukkah; a green breakfast comprising of channa dahl, dukkah potatoes, mixed pickle, and dak dak salad; or an Armenian chicken shashlik, with biber paste marinated chicken, heirloom pickled tomato, walnut and onion salad, garlic and herb yoghurt and traditional bread.
